Moodle Archiving Q&A Questionnaire

Please take this opportunity to have some frequently asked questions answered, provide feedback and ask questions to the Learning Technology and Innovation Team.

Did you know about Moodle course archiving and course hiding?

We are glad you have been paying attention to the automatically generated emails coming from Moodle.

We started hiding courses in the Fall of 2021. This was an attempt to slow the growth of Moodle. Moodle creates a nightly backup of all courses that are set to “show” and this is important for courses that are active and changing daily. Moodle does not create new backups for hidden courses. We do not hide courses until they are 1 year old as these courses will not be accepting student submissions or be updated regularly. Email moodlesupport@tru.ca if you have a Moodle course that does not fit this guideline.

We started archiving courses in the Fall of 2023 as hiding courses did not slow the growth enough and Moodle became so large (12.7 TB, the server size is 13 TB) that we were worried if it failed or reached capacity it would be unrecoverable. Currently, we archive courses after they are 2 years old.

Email moodlesupport@tru.ca if you have a course that will remain active after it is 2 years old.

Watch for email notifications

The subject line will be similar to “Do not reply to this email (via TRU Moodle)”

The preview text will be similar to “Notice: Courses will be archived soon.”

Do you know that you can create backups of your Moodle courses and restore them?

Fantastic!

We hope you are taking advantage of this feature! For the following reasons, creating and storing your Moodle course backups is powerful!

  1. You can take your files with you. This means Moodle backup files can be restored on other Moodle servers and other Learning Management Systems.
  2. You will not lose data for courses that are not offered in a 2 year rotation or were canceled then re-offered.
  3. You will have peace of mind knowing that your data is secure and in a location you have access to.
